Research Interests
My
current research work is on UAV remote sensing as Cyber-Physical system, the
use of satellite data (GOSAT, OCO-2) in UN-REDD MRV requirements, and
synergistic application research that combines with various disciplines such as
law, economics, political science, environmental science etc. As a photographer
and remote sensing practitioner, I began to intensively occupy myself with
drone by the revolutionary prospect of being able to take aerial photograph at
any time or any place. Over time, a great deal of enthusiasm for this
technology let me publish a book about drones (2019, Drones as Cyber-Physical
Systems, Concepts and Applications for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,
SpringerNature). I was a principal investigator in the various research
projects that led to promoting geographic information to the general public. I
was program co-chair of Organizing Committee of FOSS4G Seoul from 2013 to 2015.
I was an associate editor and member of the editorial board of the Spatial
Information Research, from 1995 to 2015. My Ph.D. and Master thesis focus on
the validity evaluation and application of modern remote sensing techniques for
a zero-carbon city. Furthermore, I have been in a university teaching
position of Remote Sensing and GIS since 1999. I had worked as a Government
Official in Ministry of Environment in Korea, with focus on an application of
remote sensing and GIS. I was responsible for initial introduction of remote
sensing and image processing for the Ministry of Environment in Korea. I had
developed extensive research and laboratory capabilities in the Ministry. My
experience includes projects with related central governments in Korea, as well
as private companies and research institutions. I have been frequently invited
as a consultant for zero-carbon Geomatics planning, to local and central
governments.

The
university has established an interdisciplinary post-graduate Geomatics program
in 1999 to meet the need for more and better trained personnel from private and
public sectors. The program offers academic degrees leading to master and
doctor of engineering or technical science. Several faculty members in the
university such as geography, business administration, computer science and
computer engineering are participating in the program with their own specialty.
My service involves graduate-level teaching of zero-carbon Geomatics, Coordinator of the program and initiation
and direction of the Ph.D. program in zero-carbon Geomatics.

I deliver my lectures in English in the University.
This course provides basic concepts and procedures
used in remote-sensed image processing (including aerial photograph) and
cartography. Emphasis is placed on use of digital satellite image data. The
course is designed for beginning level users and students will have 'hands-on'
training in computer processing of digital data sets from satellite sensors and
digital maps in a GIS structure.
Remote
sensing with sensors mounted on satellites or aircrafts is much needed for
resource management, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and homeland
defense. Remote sensing data considered include those from multispectral, hyperspectral,
radar, optical, and infrared sensors. Classification is often one of the major
tasks in information processing. For example, we need to identify vegetations,
waterways, and man-made structures from remote sensing of earth. The large
amount of data available makes remote sensing data uniquely suitable for
statistical pattern recognition. This class will address several issues on
statistical pattern recognition that are related to information processing in
remote sensing. Though the class is largely tutorial in nature, some specific
issues considered are image models for characterization of contextual
information, neural networks for image classification, and the performance
measures. Either to supplement the capability of sensors or to effectively
utilize the enormous amount of sensor data, many advances in statistical
pattern recognition can be very useful in machine recognition of the data. The
potentials and opportunities of using statistical pattern recognition in remote
sensing are indeed unlimited. This course focuses on quantitative methods of
spatial pattern description and relationship analysis applicable to different
types of geographical data (points, lines, areas, and surfaces), and emphasis
spatial statistical and numerical techniques for describing, analysing and
comparing spatial patterns so that spatial relationships among relevant
geographical phenomena can be characterised, modelled, predicted or optimised
Geographic
Information Systems
The
focus of this course involves students to understand the GIS tool critically,
both to conduct research and to present that research in a meaningful way. The
students are asked to carry out a simulated GIS project which will help
reinforce the value of what they will learn during the course. Early part of
the course will focus on hand-on session for the primary software package
(ArcGIS 9.0) used in this course while the later part of the course will deal
with reviewing literatures for topics related to fundamentals of GIS and
operational GIS techniques. The simulated projects are designed to acquaint you
with the problems and possibilities of GIS. You are required to construct a
data base from available maps and statistical information, and to manipulate
this data base in accordance with your own interest. Every student is required
to submit a title and one-paragraph long proposal for the project paper and
have it approved by the instructor. More details about what would be considered
acceptable, and examples of acceptable topics, will be provided in class. You
will be called upon to share your assignment (in oral and/or written form) with
the rest of the class. Detailed lecture will be provided for the simulated
project and paper writing.
Future Industry
and Job Selection
This
course is designed for students to introduce the larger picture for 4th
industrial revolution. Drone is a valuable pedagogical tool for exploring the
core concepts of the 4th Industrial Revolution. We will explore how cyber-physical
system as the core concepts of the 4th Industrial Revolution is embedded or
portrayed in a drone, that involves ethical, legal and social concerns.
These days,
an environmental inspection in our daily life is a necessary part in order to
determine if a human risk exists or may be imminent. Many public and private
parties are looking at disturbed natural environment, and abandoned,
potentially polluted properties in a new light and seeing a golden opportunity.
Attending this course will give you valuable insight into ESA theory and how
you can maximize on your life quality - while limiting your risks and
liabilities from surrounding environment. For someone who performs Basic
Environmental Inspections on residential and commercial properties. this
consists of the visual inspection of the property and researching available
environmental data to present a comprehensive report to the client. When
environmental site assessment in an area-wide view is required, a detailed
GIS-based feature mapping of the entire block will be applied, using new
techniques for identifying contamination on the basis of color aerial
photography/videography and satellite imagery. Identified sites will be visited
during the field portion of this project and carefully evaluated using
ecological and human health risk models, combined with field observations and
sampling.
This
course is designed to provide the larger picture for natural, historic,
economic and social systems that shape geography of Korea. The course is
divided into three modules. The first part will be introducing geography as
academic discipline and the approaches used in the subject. Also, considerable
time will be spent on discussing the fundamental nature for the geography of
Korea. Building on this understanding, the second module is structured around a
suite of case studies which are highlighting selected areas within each of
central and south regions of the country. It is expected to serve the need of foreign
students to gain an in-depth understanding of the realities for the geography
of Korea. Lecture will focus on critically debating the merits and limitations
for geographical condition of Korea. Final module will seek to synthesize the
learning from the course. This will be an opportunity for students to provide
their own prescriptive advice for utilizing geography of Korea and proposals
for reforming the system of geography, based on experience in their home
country.
